Professional Development

Don’t miss the opportunity to network with fellow health professionals and expand your knowledge about health reform at the Metropolitan Washington Public Health Association's 2011 Annual Meeting on Tuesday April 12, 2011.
This year, National Public Health Week (April 4-10) focuses on injury prevention. Become part of the discussion by attending "Violence and Abuse: How Public Health Can Help Prevent and Respond" on Thursday April 7, 2011 from 12pm-1:30pm.
If the lunchtime discussion wasn’t enough for you, make sure to attend the Workshop on The Social and Economic Costs of Violence: The Value of Prevention April 28 & 29 at the Kaiser Family Foundation in Washington, DC.
End the month by attending the D.C. Health Communications Conference April 29 - May 1, with the theme "Designing for Health."
Get Involved

Most of us in the health sector have heard about – if not participated in – National Public Health Week, which takes place this year from April 4-10, 2011. In honor of this week, check out the organization that manages NPHW, the American Public Health Association. Since so many YHPS members are students or considering graduate school, the APHA student assesmbly might be of particular interest.
In addition to joining the general assembly, APHA-SA members can join a number of committees depending on their interests, all in support of public health. These include the Action Committee, which participates in advocacy relating to health issues; the Opportunities Committee, which facilitates access to jobs, internships, and training positions; the Campus Liaison Subcommittee, which interfaces with schools and more.
What’s New in Social Media and Technology
Eating Right, Keeping Fit Online
Social networking isn't just for sharing fun videos, photos and news stories on sites like YouTube and MySpace. Today there are niche social media sites catering to Catholic singles, pet lovers and baby boomers and senior citizens. But when a site like Facebook connects 500 million people across all sorts of demographics around the world, what purpose do niche sites serve?
In the world of fitness and nutrition, social media is a powerful tool for creating healthy eating and exercising habits. Today there are a multitude of interesting tools that can be used online, from Livestrong's The Daily Plate to MapMyFitness, FitDay and DailyBurn. These tools allow you to calculate and track the health of the items you eat and the exercise routines you enjoy. It's no surprise that Americans are using these tools -- people are increasingly looking to the Internet for health information. In fact, searching for health information is the third most common thing adults across all ages do online, according to Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project.
What’s Happening?

Cherry Blossom Bike Rally and Ride - Join children and adults of all ages on SundayApril 10, 2011 for this free event where biking, health, fun and fitness take center stage.
What better way to focus on your own health than relaxing and listening to some good music. Check out the Big Band Jam! Jazz festival the week of April 15-24, 2011.
Seeking a new cultural experience? Why not attend a movie screening at the DC International Film Festival April 7-17, 2011.
